LexAPI MCP server

by Lex-API

Look up EU laws, court cases, and citations from EUR-Lex right inside your AI chat.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Summarize Article 17 of the GDPR”, the LexAPI MCP server connects it to EUR-Lex, and you get back plain answer in chat.

This is a small add-on that connects your AI assistant to LexAPI, a service that reads EU legal documents from EUR-Lex. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI about EU regulations, directives, and court cases in normal language, and it will go fetch the real text for you. It is handy for anyone who works with EU law and does not want to click through the EUR-Lex website by hand.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to LexAPI, which in turn reads EUR-Lex, the official database of EU law. So when you ask a legal question, your AI can actually look it up instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like "summarize Article 17 of the GDPR" or "which rules amend this directive?". Your AI passes that request to this helper, which sends it to LexAPI. LexAPI searches EUR-Lex, finds the right document or citation, and sends the details back. Your AI then reads that and writes you a plain answer in the chat, often with the document's own text quoted or summarized.

What you can do with it

  • Search EUR-Lex by keywords, dates, document type, author, or language
  • Fetch a full EU document by its CELEX number, including articles, sections, tables, and annexes
  • Pull just the metadata of a document when you only need the basics
  • Open a document straight from a EUR-Lex web address you paste in
  • List recent Official Journal publications from the last week or so
  • See which documents cite a given law, and which laws that document cites
  • Run a meaning-based search over EU case law or legislation (paid plans)

Try asking your AI

  • “Summarize Article 17 of the GDPR”
  • “Which regulations amend Directive 95/46/EC?”
  • “Show me EU documents published in the Official Journal in the last 7 days”
  • “Find EU court cases about data protection and give me the main ones”

What it gives back to you

You get back answers written by your AI, based on real EUR-Lex content. That can be a summary of a law, a list of matching documents with their CELEX numbers and dates, the full text of articles and annexes, or a map of which documents cite which. It all appears as normal chat text, sometimes with tables or bullet lists.

Before you start

What you need
