Austrian Law (RIS) MCP server

by philrox

Lets your AI look up Austrian federal and state laws, court decisions and legal gazettes for you.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What does Austrian law say about tenancy rights?”, the Austrian Law (RIS) MCP server connects it to Austrian Law (RIS), and you get back matching laws and decisions.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to RIS, Austria's official legal information system. Once it is set up, you can ask plain questions about Austrian law and get real answers pulled from the government database. It is handy for anyone who works with Austrian law but does not want to dig through the RIS website by hand.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, in this case a connection to Austria's official legal database, RIS. When you ask a legal question, the AI passes it to this helper, the helper talks to the RIS service, and the answer comes back into your chat. You do not need to know how any of that works underneath.

What this MCP server does

You type a question about Austrian law in your chat, in English or German. Your AI reads the question and decides which kind of search fits, for example federal law, state law, or court decisions. It then asks this helper to run that search against the official RIS service. The helper sends back the matching documents, and your AI shows you the results and the text. If you want, it can also open a full document and walk you through it.

What you can do with it

  • Search Austrian federal laws like the ABGB or StGB
  • Look up state laws for any of the nine provinces
  • Find court decisions from many Austrian courts
  • Check the Federal and State Law Gazettes
  • Read the full text of a legal document by its ID
  • Follow the change history of a law over time
  • Search government bills and ministerial decrees

Try asking your AI

  • “What does Austrian law say about tenancy rights?”
  • “Find Constitutional Court decisions on freedom of expression.”
  • “Show me section 1295 of the ABGB.”
  • “What laws about climate protection were published in 2024?”

What it gives back to you

You get back a list of matching laws, decisions or gazette entries, usually with a short title and a link. Your AI then writes a summary or quotes the relevant part in the chat. If you ask for a full document, you get the text itself, sometimes shown in a small reader you can scroll through. In apps that support it, the results appear as a clickable list you can page through.

Before you start

What you need

  • An MCP-compatible AI app such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code with Copilot, Cursor or Windsurf
  • Node.js installed on your computer (the setup uses a tool called npx)

Good to know

The answers come from an official database but your AI can still misread or summarise them, so check the original RIS document before you rely on it for anything important.
