GistPad MCP server

by lostintangent

Manage your GitHub Gists from chat: create notes, update files, add comments, and reuse prompts.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What is in my project notes gist?”, the GistPad MCP server connects it to GitHub Gists, and you get back your gist contents in the chat.

GistPad MCP connects your AI assistant to your GitHub Gists, so you can read and write your notes, daily lists, and saved prompts without leaving the chat. It is handy if you already keep notes or snippets in Gists and want to work with them by just asking. You do not need to be a programmer to use it, but you do need a GitHub account.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill. This helper connects your AI to GitHub Gists, which is a place where people store notes and small files. Once it is connected, your AI can look up your Gists, change them, and add comments when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like what is in my project notes gist. The AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper talks to GitHub using a special password you provide. GitHub sends back the contents of your gist, and the AI shows it to you in the chat. If you ask it to change something, the helper makes that change on GitHub and tells you it is done.

What you can do with it

  • List all your gists
  • Read the contents of a gist
  • Create a new gist with files
  • Update a file inside a gist
  • Add or edit comments on a gist
  • Duplicate a gist with all its files
  • Delete a gist or a file in it

Try asking your AI

  • “How many gists have I edited this month?”
  • “Create a new gist about my reading list”
  • “Add a comment to my project gist saying the deadline moved”
  • “Update my meeting notes gist to add today's action items”

What it gives back to you

You get back plain answers in the chat, like a list of your gists with their names and descriptions, or the text inside a specific gist. When you ask it to create or change something, it tells you what it did, such as which gist was updated. It can also show you comments and share links.

Before you start

What you need

  • A GitHub account
  • A GitHub personal access token with only the gist permission (GitHub gives you one for free on their website)
  • An MCP client like Claude Desktop or VS Code with Copilot

Good to know

This helper can create, change, and delete your gists and files, so double-check before you say yes to a delete or a big change.

Install it with your AI

Add GistPad MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check GistPad MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
