Wiki.js MCP server

by ni-c

Let your AI search, read, and edit pages on your own Wiki.js wiki for you.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to your own Wiki.js wiki. Wiki.js is a self-hosted wiki, meaning the pages live on a server you or your company runs, not on someone else's site. If your team keeps notes, docs, or how-to guides in Wiki.js, this lets your AI look things up and make edits when you ask.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app. This one connects your AI to your Wiki.js wiki, so it can search pages, read them, and write changes there when you ask. You set it up once, and after that you just talk to your AI normally.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your wiki, like finding a page or reading one. The AI uses this helper, which talks to your Wiki.js server through its built-in connection. The helper fetches the pages, searches the text, or makes the change you asked for. Then the AI tells you what it found or what it changed, right in the chat. You never have to open the wiki yourself.

What you can do with it

  • Search your wiki for pages by title or description
  • Search the actual text inside pages, not just titles
  • Read a page and summarize it for you
  • Create a new page with content you describe
  • Update an existing page without overwriting someone else's edit
  • See the history of a page and who changed what
  • List the pages and folders under a section

Try asking your AI

  • “Find any wiki page that mentions our vacation policy”
  • “Summarize the page at docs/setup for me”
  • “Create a new page called team/meeting-notes with today's agenda”
  • “Update the page docs/onboarding and add a section about the new laptop process”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain chat: a list of matching pages, a summary of a page's content, or a confirmation that a page was created or updated. For searches, you see the page titles and paths so you can ask for more detail. For edits, the AI tells you what changed and where. If something went wrong, like a page was edited by someone else in the meantime, it says so instead of overwriting.

Before you start

What you need

  • A running Wiki.js instance (your own wiki)
  • An API token from your Wiki.js admin panel (Administration, then API Access)
  • Node.js version 22 or newer on your computer
  • The URL of your wiki, like https://wiki.example.com

Good to know

The API key can be very powerful and may allow changing or deleting pages and accounts, so use read-only mode or limit which paths can be written to if you want to be safe.

Install it with your AI

Add Wiki.js MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
