Gnosis MCP server
Lets your AI search your own Markdown docs instead of you pasting whole files into the chat.

Gnosis MCP is a small helper that turns a folder of Markdown notes or documentation into something your AI can search. You point it at your docs once, and after that your AI can look things up on its own. It is handy if you keep a lot of written notes and are tired of copying and pasting them into the chat.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with what is already in the conversation or in its training. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one extra skill, here the ability to search a folder of documents sitting on your own computer. You install Gnosis MCP, it reads your docs into a local index, and then your AI can ask it questions and get back the relevant passages. Nothing is sent to a cloud service; the index lives on your machine.
What this MCP server does
First you install Gnosis MCP and run one command that reads your docs folder and builds a searchable index. Then you start it, and it sits quietly in the background as a helper your AI can call. When you ask your AI something about your docs, the AI sends a search request to this helper. The helper looks through the index and hands back the most relevant short excerpts, with the matching words highlighted. Your AI reads those excerpts and answers you, without ever needing the whole file.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search your Markdown docs by keyword and get short highlighted excerpts back
- Search with meaning, not just exact words, if you turn on the optional embeddings
- Open a full document by its file path when a snippet is not enough
- Follow links between related documents to find connected notes
- Search your git commit history as searchable context
- Pull documentation in from a website by crawling it
- See stats about what is indexed and which queries came up empty
What it gives back to you
You get short passages from your own documents, usually a few hundred words, with the matched words highlighted. Sometimes you get a list of document paths and titles, or a full document if you asked for one. You can also get simple stats, like how many documents are indexed and which queries found nothing. Everything shows up right in the chat, as part of your AI's answer.
Before you start
What you need
- Python installed on your computer
- A folder of Markdown or text documents you want to make searchable
- An MCP client that can run local servers, such as Claude Desktop or Cursor
Good to know
If you turn on write mode, your AI can create, change, or delete documents in your index, so leave it off unless you really want that.
Install it with your AI
Add Gnosis MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Gnosis MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who keeps a lot of written notes, internal docs, or project documentation and wants their AI to search it instead of pasting files.
