GnuCash MCP server

by ninetails-io

Ask your AI about your GnuCash books and let it add transactions, invoices and reports for you.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What did I spend on groceries last month?”, on your own computer the GnuCash MCP server works with your GnuCash file, and you get back your answer in plain words.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to your own GnuCash bookkeeping file. You can ask questions like how your month is going, or tell it to record a transaction, and it works on your real book. It is handy for people who keep their money records in GnuCash and want to talk to them instead of clicking around.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your files or your accounts. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill, and here that skill is talking to your GnuCash book. Once it is connected, your AI can look things up in your book and make changes there when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question, like what you spent on groceries last month. The AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper opens your local GnuCash file, reads the numbers it needs, and sends them back. Your AI then explains the answer in plain words in the chat. If you ask it to add or change something, the helper writes that into the same file, just like GnuCash itself would.

What you can do with it

  • See a full dashboard of your book, including net worth, runway and budget pacing
  • Ask where your money went in a given month or category
  • Add or edit transactions by describing them in chat
  • See who owes you money and which invoices are overdue
  • Track budgets and set new monthly limits
  • Follow investments and their cost basis
  • Get help with reconciling your accounts

Try asking your AI

  • “Summarize my book and tell me how I'm doing this month”
  • “What did I spend on dining last month?”
  • “Show me anyone who owes me money”
  • “Add a 42 dollar grocery expense from my checking account today”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain words in the chat: summaries, lists of accounts or transactions, totals, and warnings about things like overdue invoices or stale prices. When it changes something, it tells you what it changed. Everything stays in your local file, and the helper keeps its own audit log and backups next to it.

Before you start

What you need

  • GnuCash installed, with your book saved in SQLite format (the older XML format needs a one-time conversion)
  • An AI assistant that supports MCP, such as Claude Desktop
  • The full path to your .gnucash file on your computer

Good to know

It can add and change entries in your real book, so keep a backup and check what it did before trusting the numbers.
