OpenAI MCP server
Ask OpenAI's models questions straight from your AI chat, without switching apps.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to OpenAI's models. Once it is set up, you can ask your assistant to send a question to OpenAI and show you the answer, all inside the same chat. It is handy if you already use ChatGPT-style answers and want them next to your other work.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to OpenAI, so it can send your question over and bring the reply back. You just ask in normal words, and the helper does the behind-the-scenes work.
What this MCP server does
You type a question in your AI chat, like you normally would. Your AI passes that question to this helper program. The helper sends it to OpenAI's models and waits for the answer. When the answer comes back, the helper hands it to your AI, and your AI shows it to you in the chat. From your side, it looks like your assistant just answered, but the words actually came from OpenAI.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Ask OpenAI a question and read its answer in your chat
- Compare how OpenAI replies to something your own AI said
- Get a second opinion on a piece of writing or an idea
- Draft short text with OpenAI without opening another website
- Check a fact or explanation against OpenAI's answer
Try asking your AI
- “Ask OpenAI to explain what a purchase order is in simple words”
- “Send this paragraph to OpenAI and ask it to make it shorter”
- “Ask OpenAI for three subject lines for a follow-up email”
- “Check with OpenAI whether this meeting summary sounds clear”
What it gives back to you
You get text back in your chat, the same way a normal reply looks. It is OpenAI's answer to whatever you asked, passed along by your assistant. There are no files or charts, just words you can read and copy.
Before you start
What you need
- An OpenAI account with an API key (a kind of password for apps; OpenAI gives you one from your account page, and it is usually paid by usage)
- Python installed on your computer
- The Claude desktop app, since the setup uses its config file
Good to know
Using OpenAI's models through an API key usually costs money per request, so keep an eye on your OpenAI usage.
Install it with your AI
Add OpenAI MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check OpenAI MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who already use an AI assistant daily and want OpenAI's answers available in the same chat without switching tabs.
