opsgate is a helper that lets your AI look at your servers and, when you allow it, make careful changes like restarting a service. It is made for people who run a server or two and want help diagnosing problems without handing the AI a free-for-all command line. If you have ever asked "what is using all my disk?" and wished your AI could just go look, this is for you.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one connects your AI to your servers, so it can check what is running, read logs, and look at disk usage for you. You ask a question in plain words, and the AI uses this helper to go find the answer.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like "why is nginx throwing errors?" The AI then uses opsgate to run safe, read-only checks on your server, such as looking at services, logs, and open ports. opsgate builds each of those checks itself from a fixed list of allowed actions, so the AI never types a raw command. If a change is needed, like restarting a service, opsgate pauses and shows you the exact command, and waits for you to approve or deny. Everything it does, including refusals, gets written to a log you can check later.

- Check whether services like nginx or MySQL are running
- Read recent log lines and errors from a service
- Look at disk usage and list folders to find what filled up
- Inspect Docker containers, their logs, and restart counts
- Restart or reload a service after you approve it

What it gives back to you
You get plain answers in the chat, built from real output on your server. That might be a list of running services, a snippet of log lines, a table of open ports, or a short explanation of what the AI found. When it makes a change, you first see a prompt showing the exact command, and after you approve it, the result lands in the chat and in the audit log.
Before you start
What you need
- The opsgate program installed on your machine (the README shows a one-line install command)
- A server you can reach, or just your own computer to start with
- An SSH key if you want it to manage a remote server
- An AI client that can run local helper programs, like Claude Code or Claude Desktop
Good to know
In operate or full mode it can change your server, so keep production in observe mode and read the approval prompt before you click Approve.
