FreshContext MCP server

by PrinceGabriel-lgtm

Lets your AI check how fresh and trustworthy web sources are before it uses them in an answer.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Which AI agent blog post is most current?”, the FreshContext MCP server works in steps: collects your sources, then checks each one, then scores and labels them, and you get back sources ranked by freshness.

FreshContext is a helper that looks at the sources your AI is about to use and tells you how old they are, where they came from, and whether they are still good enough to rely on. It was built after the author asked an AI to find job openings and got sent to jobs that had already closed. It is handy for anyone who uses an AI to research things that change quickly, like jobs, prices, news, or software releases.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program you connect to your AI, and it gives the AI a new skill or a connection to a service. This one, FreshContext, gives your AI a way to check whether web sources are still fresh and where they came from. Once it is connected, your AI can ask FreshContext about a source and get back a clear verdict instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question, and it gathers some candidate sources, like a blog post, a paper, or a job listing. Before using them, it sends those sources to FreshContext. FreshContext looks at when each one was published, what kind of source it is, and how well it matches your question, then gives each one a freshness score and a plain-English verdict. Your AI then uses that verdict to decide what to keep, what to flag, and what to leave out. You end up with an answer that is honest about how current the information is.

What you can do with it

  • Check whether a source is still fresh enough to use
  • See when a page or paper was published and when it was retrieved
  • Get a plain-English verdict like use as main evidence or treat with caution
  • Compare several sources and see which ones rank highest for your question
  • Pull in GitHub, Hacker News, arXiv, Reddit, and other sources with timestamps
  • Look up job listings, company info, or finance quotes with freshness notes
  • See why a source was kept, questioned, or left out

Try asking your AI

  • “Find recent job openings for a data analyst and tell me which ones are still live”
  • “Summarize the latest arXiv papers on retrieval and flag anything older than a year”
  • “What are people saying on Hacker News about this tool, and how recent are those posts”
  • “Compare these three blog posts about AI agents and tell me which one is most current”

What it gives back to you

You get back a short verdict for each source, with a label like primary source or treat with caution, a freshness score, and a few bullet points explaining why. It also shows when the source was published and when it was retrieved. In the chat, this usually looks like a small list of sources with scores and short reasons, plus a suggested action for each one. FreshContext does not certify that a source is true, only whether it is fresh and usable.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers
  • Node.js 20 or newer if you want to run it on your own computer
  • An internet connection, since some of its tools look things up online

Good to know

The project says it is no longer being developed, and it does not check whether a source is actually true, only whether it is fresh and where it came from.

Install it with your AI

Add FreshContext MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check FreshContext MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
