Database access MCP server

by Rheopyrin

Lets your AI run read-only SQL queries on your databases through secure tunnels.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redshift and SQL Server. It is handy if you need to look things up in a database but do not want to write queries yourself. You ask in plain words, and the AI runs the query for you.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one connects your AI to your databases, so it can look things up or run queries for you when you ask. You set it up once, and then it quietly works in the background.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your data, like how many orders came in last week. The AI turns that into a database query and sends it through this helper. The helper connects to your database, possibly through a secure tunnel, runs the query, and sends the results back. Your AI then shows you the answer in the chat. You can also ask it to save large results to a file instead of showing them in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • List the databases you have set up
  • Test if a database connection is working
  • Run read-only SQL queries
  • See the plan for a query without running it
  • Export query results to a CSV or JSONL file
  • Open and close secure tunnels to your database
  • Reload your configuration without restarting

Try asking your AI

  • “How many users signed up last month?”
  • “Show me the top 10 products by sales.”
  • “Test the connection to my production database.”
  • “Export all orders from 2024 to a CSV file.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain language, like numbers or lists. For example, if you ask for the number of users, the AI will reply with a number. If you ask for a list of products, it will show a table or a list. For large results, it can save a file and tell you where it is.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 20.19 or newer
  • A database you can access
  • Connection details for that database (host, port, username, password, etc.)

Good to know

This tool can run queries and save files, so be careful when using it with databases that contain sensitive information or when saving files to shared locations.

Who it's for

This is most useful for people who work with data but are not database experts, like analysts, product managers, or support staff who need quick answers from a database.
