projectmem MCP server

by riponcm

Your AI remembers past bugs, fixes and decisions in your coding projects, so it stops repeating mistakes.

projectmem is a memory helper for AI coding assistants. It keeps a local record of the problems you hit, what you tried, what worked and what you decided, inside each of your code projects. It is handy if you use an AI to write or fix code and you are tired of it forgetting everything between sessions.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It has no memory of your project and no way to look things up on its own. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. Here, the helper connects your AI to projectmem, so it can read your project's past notes and write down new ones while you work.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI to work on your code. The AI calls this helper, and the helper looks inside a hidden folder in your project called .projectmem. It finds the issues, failed attempts, fixes and decisions recorded there, and hands the relevant ones back to the AI. When the AI learns something new, it writes that down too. Before you save your work with git, projectmem can warn you if you are about to repeat an approach that already failed.

What you can do with it

  • Recall past issues and fixes for the file you are editing
  • Log a new problem your AI ran into
  • Record a fix that worked so it is not lost
  • Save a decision and why you made it
  • Warn you before you repeat a failed approach
  • Show a dashboard of everything your project has learned
  • Keep memory for many projects from one setup

Try asking your AI

  • “What did we already try to fix the empty stars bug?”
  • “Log this issue: the login form resets on refresh”
  • “Have we made a decision about which database we use?”
  • “Before I edit this file, warn me if I am about to repeat a mistake”

What it gives back to you

You get short answers in the chat, like a list of past issues for a file, a summary of what was tried, or a warning that an approach already failed. When your AI logs something, you see a short confirmation such as the issue number and the project it was saved to. You can also open a dashboard page that shows your project's history as cards and timelines.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python installed on your computer
  • The projectmem program installed with pip
  • Your AI app connected to the projectmem MCP server
  • A code project on your computer that you want to remember things about

Good to know

It writes notes into a hidden folder inside your project, and its git hooks run when you commit, so try it on a project you can afford to experiment with first.

Install it with your AI

Add projectmem MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check projectmem MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
