by rossshannon

Lets your AI look up current weather and an 8-day forecast for any place in the world.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What's the weather like in New York right now?”, the Weekly Weather MCP server connects it to OpenWeatherMap, and you get back A friendly weather answer.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to live weather data from OpenWeatherMap. Once it is set up, you can just ask about the weather anywhere on Earth and get a real answer instead of a guess. It is handy if you plan your week around the outdoors, travel, or just want to know whether to bring an umbrella.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to OpenWeatherMap, a weather data service, so it can look up real forecasts for you. You ask in plain words, and the helper fetches the numbers behind the scenes.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like what the weather will be like in Boston this week. The AI passes your question to this helper, which talks to OpenWeatherMap using a key you provide. OpenWeatherMap sends back current conditions and a forecast covering today plus the next seven days, with morning, afternoon, and evening details. The helper hands that back to your AI, which turns it into a friendly answer in the chat. You never see the raw data unless you want to.

What you can do with it

  • Check the current weather in any city right now
  • See an 8-day forecast with morning, afternoon, and evening details
  • Compare days to pick the best one for an outdoor plan
  • Look up rain chances and precipitation for the week ahead
  • Check temperature, humidity, and wind speed for a location
  • Get forecasts in a time zone you choose

Try asking your AI

  • “What's the weather like in New York right now?”
  • “I want to mow my lawn this week in Boston. Which day looks best?”
  • “Will it rain in Tokyo over the next few days?”
  • “What's the windiest day coming up in Chicago? I want to fly a kite.”

What it gives back to you

You get a written answer in the chat, like current conditions or a day-by-day summary of the week. It can include temperatures, what the sky will be like, humidity, wind speed, and the chance of rain. Your AI usually turns the numbers into plain sentences and may suggest the best day for whatever you asked about.

Before you start

What you need

  • A free OpenWeatherMap account
  • An OpenWeatherMap API key with the One Call API 3.0 plan (a kind of password for apps; the site gives you one, and activation can take up to an hour)
  • Python installed on your computer
  • An MCP client such as Claude Desktop or Cursor

Good to know

The free OpenWeatherMap plan covers 1,000 calls a day, and anything beyond that can be charged to the card on your account, so set a usage cap in your OpenWeatherMap settings to avoid surprise costs.
