JSON file MCP server
Let your AI browse and search any JSON file you have, like a product list or FAQ.
This is a small helper program that takes one JSON file you already have, like a product catalogue, a price list, or a set of FAQs, and lets your AI read it. You point it at the file once, and after that you can just ask questions in plain words. It is handy if your data lives in a file and you would rather not copy and paste it into the chat every time.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one connects your AI to a JSON file on your computer, so it can look things up there when you ask. You set it up once, and then it quietly sits in the background doing the looking up for you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question about your data, like which items are in stock. The AI passes your question to this helper program. The helper opens your JSON file and looks through the records inside it. It picks out the matching ones, or the single record you asked for, and hands them back. Your AI then turns that into a normal answer in the chat.
What you can do with it
- List records from your file, a page at a time
- Search your records by keyword across the fields you choose
- Look up one record by its id, like a product code
- Ask follow-up questions about what it found
- Keep your data read-only, so nothing in the file gets changed
Try asking your AI
- “Which teas are under 400 rupees and in stock?”
- “Show me product MUG-001.”
- “Search my FAQ for anything about refunds.”
- “List the first 10 items in my catalogue.”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, written in normal sentences by your AI. Behind the scenes it receives lists of records, single records, or search matches from your file. It can also tell you how many matched, or show the fields of one item. Nothing in your file is changed, because the tools only read.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js 20 or newer installed on your computer
- A JSON file you want your AI to read
- An MCP client like Claude Desktop, Claude Code, or Cursor
Good to know
It only reads your file, so it cannot change or delete anything, but be careful that the JSON file you point it at does not contain private information you would not want your AI to see.
Install it with your AI
Add JSON file MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check JSON file MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,361 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who keeps data in a JSON file, like a small shop owner with a product list, a support person with an FAQ, or a writer with a docs index.
