SAME memory MCP server

by sgx-labs

Give your AI a lasting memory of your notes, decisions, and past sessions, all stored on your own computer.

SAME is a memory helper for AI tools. It reads your markdown notes, remembers what you decided, and hands that context back to your AI the next time you open it. It is handy if you use Claude Code, Cursor, or a similar tool and you are tired of re-explaining your project every session.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with what is in front of it right now. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one connects your AI to a folder of your own notes, so it can look things up there and save new things back. SAME runs on your computer, so your notes never leave your machine.

What this MCP server does

You point SAME at a folder of markdown notes. It reads them and builds a searchable index on your computer. When you ask your AI something, the AI quietly asks SAME for the most relevant notes and uses them to answer. When you make a decision or finish a session, the AI can save that back into your notes so the next session starts with it. You get answers that cite your own notes instead of guesses.

What you can do with it

  • Search your notes and get the closest matches with source file names
  • Save a project decision so it comes back in future sessions
  • Write a session handoff so tomorrow's session picks up where you stopped
  • Read a full note by its file path
  • Find notes similar to one you are already reading
  • See recently changed notes and your current git state
  • Check the health of your notes and flag ones that may be out of date

Try asking your AI

  • “What did we decide about authentication?”
  • “Search my notes for the API rate limit rules”
  • “Save a decision: we are going with Postgres instead of SQLite”
  • “Create a handoff for today's session so I can continue tomorrow”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain text, usually with the note file names they came from. Search gives you a short ranked list with a score and a snippet from each note. Saving a decision or handoff writes a new markdown file into your notes folder, and the AI tells you it was saved.

Before you start

What you need

  • A folder of markdown notes on your computer
  • The SAME program installed (one command from the website, or npm install -g @sgx-labs/same)
  • Optional: Ollama running locally if you want meaning-based search instead of keyword search

Good to know

It can create and change files in your notes folder, so point it at a folder you are happy for it to write into, and keep secrets out of the indexed area by using the _PRIVATE folder.

Install it with your AI

Add SAME memory MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
