This is a helper from SkySQL (the MariaDB Cloud team) that connects your AI assistant to your cloud databases. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI in plain English to spin up a new database, run a query, or talk to a database AI agent. It is handy if you work with data but do not want to click through a web console for every small task.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to SkySQL, MariaDB's cloud database service, so the AI can look things up and do things there when you ask. You stay in the chat, and the helper does the work behind the scenes.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like "create a small MariaDB database for me" or "run this query on my database". The AI passes your request to this helper program, which talks to SkySQL on your behalf. SkySQL creates the database, runs the query, or asks its AI agent for an answer. The result comes back to your AI, which explains it to you in the chat.

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: lists of your databases, the rows a query returned, confirmation that a database was created or deleted, or a SQL statement the AI agent wrote for you. Numbers and tables show up as text you can read. If something failed, the AI tells you what went wrong.

What you need

A SkySQL / MariaDB Cloud account (you can sign up for free)
A SkySQL API key from your account page
Python 3.10 or newer on the machine running the server
For Claude: the server deployed at a public HTTPS address

Good to know

This server can create and delete databases and run SQL that changes your data, so be careful with requests that delete or modify things.
