Shakespeare Monologues MCP server

by slshults

Lets your AI search Shakespeare monologues by character, play or first line and fetch full text, paraphrases and summaries.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Find a monologue for a young woman in a comedy”, the Shakespeare Monologues MCP server connects it to Shakespeare Monologues, and you get back monologues in your chat.

This is a small helper that connects your AI to a public collection of Shakespeare monologues. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI for a speech by character, play or first line, and it will look it up for you. It is handy for actors preparing an audition, students, teachers, or anyone who just likes Shakespeare.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside source. This one connects your AI to shakespeare-monologues.org, a public website that lists Shakespeare monologues. So when you ask about a speech, your AI can actually go and look it up there instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like "find a monologue for a young woman in a comedy" or "show me Hamlet's first speech". Your AI passes that request to this helper. The helper talks to the shakespeare-monologues.org public index, which is a big list of monologues with details like character, play, act and first line. It sends the matching entries back to your AI, and your AI shows them to you in the chat. Some entries also come with a link to the full text, a modern-English paraphrase, or a summary of the scene or play.

What you can do with it

  • Search monologues by character, play or first line
  • Filter results by gender, play, style or act
  • Fetch a specific monologue's details by its number
  • Get a random monologue, optionally filtered by gender or play
  • List every play with its type and how many monologues it has
  • Find every monologue spoken by a particular character
  • Read the current Monologue of the Day
  • Get a monologue's full text with a modern-English paraphrase

Try asking your AI

  • “Find me a monologue for a young woman in a Shakespeare comedy”
  • “Show me Hamlet's first big speech”
  • “Give me a random monologue by a male character”
  • “What is today's Monologue of the Day?”
  • “Summarize the scene for that monologue”

What it gives back to you

You get back a list of matching monologues with details like the character, the play, the act and the first line, plus a link to the full text on the website. If you ask for one specific monologue, you get just that entry. For some monologues you also get the full text with a modern-English paraphrase, or a short summary of the scene or play. Everything shows up right in your chat as text you can read or copy.

Before you start

What you need

  • An AI app that supports MCP servers, like the Claude desktop app

Good to know

It is read-only, so it cannot change or delete anything, but the paraphrases and summaries are AI-generated and only partly filled in, so some of them may come back empty.
