Internet Archive MCP server
by smeet666
Search inside millions of scanned books and old web pages, and read the web as it was on a given day.

This is a small helper that connects your AI chat to the Internet Archive, the free online library that keeps scanned books, old magazines, films and copies of web pages going back to 1996. It is handy if you research history, check old sources, or want to see what a website looked like years ago. You do not need an account or a password to use it.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to the Internet Archive, so it can search inside scanned books, look up catalogue entries, and read old web pages for you. You just ask in normal words, and the helper does the looking up.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question, like which old books mention a certain place. The AI passes your question to this helper, and the helper talks to the Internet Archive's search systems. The archive sends back matching items, short passages from scanned pages, or a list of saved copies of a web address. Your AI then turns that into a clear answer in your chat, with titles, dates and links you can open.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search the words inside millions of scanned books and documents
- Find catalogue items by title, creator, subject or media type
- Look up one item's details, files and licence
- Find books by subject, place, period or person
- List the saved copies of a web address
- Read a web page as it looked on or near a chosen date
Try asking your AI
- “Which books mention the Beaumont lighthouse?”
- “Find me items about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.”
- “Find books on beekeeping in France published before 1900.”
- “What did bbc.co.uk look like in March 2001?”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in your chat: lists of matching items with titles, creators and years, short passages quoted from scanned pages, or a single item's record with its files and licence. For web pages, you get the saved copy's date and a link to open it. Everything comes with links so you can check the original yourself.
Before you start
What you need
- The Claude desktop app or another chat app that supports MCP servers
- Node.js 24 or newer (or Docker, if you prefer that route)
- Nothing else: no account and no password
Good to know
The text inside scanned books comes from automatic reading of the page, so it can contain misread words; check the original page before quoting it as exact.
