Code Assistant is a free, open-source coding helper that runs on your own computer. It gives your AI a set of basic tools for working with files and folders, so it can look at your code, make changes, and run commands when you ask. It is handy for developers and anyone who wants their AI to do real work inside a project folder, not just chat.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only talk. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to your project folder on your computer, so it can list files, read them, edit them, and run commands for you. When you ask your AI to do something with your code, it uses this helper behind the scenes.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about your project, like to explain a file or fix a bug. The AI uses this helper to look at your files, read what is inside, and search for things. If you want a change, the helper can edit or write files, and it can run commands in your terminal. Then the AI tells you what it found or what it changed, right in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • List the files and folders in your project
  • Read the contents of a file
  • Search for text across your project
  • Edit or write files for you
  • Run commands in your terminal
  • Search the web for information
  • Work with several projects at once

Try asking your AI

  • “List all the files in my project folder.”
  • “Read the main file and explain what it does.”
  • “Find every place that uses the word 'config' in my code.”
  • “Add a comment at the top of README.md saying 'Work in progress'.”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in plain chat: lists of files, the text of a file, search results, or a short summary of what the AI found. If the AI made a change, it tells you which file it edited and what it changed. You can also see which tools ran and what they returned, so you always know what happened.

Before you start

What you need

  • A computer running macOS, Linux, or Windows
  • An API key from an AI provider like Anthropic or OpenAI (a kind of password; the provider gives you one when you sign up)
  • The Code Assistant app or the code-assistant program installed

Good to know

This helper can change or delete files and run commands on your computer, so only use it on projects you trust and keep backups.
