DevRag MCP server
Lets your AI search your own Markdown notes and docs by meaning, so it finds the right passage instead of reading everything.

DevRag is a small helper that lets your AI search your own Markdown files by meaning, not just by exact words. You point it at a folder of notes or docs, and it builds a searchable index on your own computer. It is handy if you keep a lot of .md files and want your AI to find the right passage quickly.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something. This one connects your AI to a folder of Markdown documents on your machine. Once it is connected, your AI can look things up in those files for you when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question in normal words, like where is the login flow described. Your AI sends that question to DevRag. DevRag turns your question into numbers, compares them with the numbers it made from your Markdown files, and picks the closest passages. It hands those passages back to your AI, which then answers you. You can also narrow the search to one folder or one file name pattern.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search your Markdown notes by meaning, not just exact words
- Limit a search to one folder, like docs/api
- Limit a search to files matching a pattern, like api-*.md
- List all the documents it has indexed
- Add a new Markdown file to the index
- Remove a document from the index
- Re-index a document after you edit it
Try asking your AI
- “Search my notes for how JWT authentication works”
- “Find where we describe the user endpoints, only in the docs/api folder”
- “Look for deployment steps in files named guide-something.md”
- “What do my notes say about the login flow?”
What it gives back to you
You get back a short list of matching passages, each with the file name, the text of the passage, and a score showing how close the match is. Your AI then reads those passages and writes an answer for you in the chat. It does not dump whole files, just the parts that fit your question.
Before you start
What you need
- The DevRag program downloaded from its Releases page (a ready-made file for your system)
- The Claude Code app, or another AI tool that can use MCP servers
- A folder of Markdown (.md) files you want to search
- An internet connection the first time you run it, so it can download the search model
Good to know
It can remove documents from its index and it reads the Markdown files you point it at, so keep an eye on which folders you configure.
Install it with your AI
Add DevRag MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check DevRag MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Developers and writers who keep a lot of Markdown notes, docs, or wikis and use Claude Code.
