Vectara MCP server

by vectara

Let your AI search your Vectara document collections and answer questions with sources.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What does my refund policy say?”, the Vectara MCP server connects it to Vectara, and you get back answer with sources.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Vectara, a service that stores your documents and searches them for you. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI questions in normal words and it will look things up in your own Vectara collections. It is handy for anyone who keeps company documents, reports, or notes in Vectara and wants quick answers from them.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to Vectara, so it can search your document collections and pull back answers when you ask. You do not need to understand how it works inside; you just need it running and your Vectara key in place.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question in plain words, like you normally would. The AI passes that question to this helper, and the helper talks to Vectara using your account. Vectara searches the document collections you point it to and either returns matching passages or writes a short answer based on them. The helper sends that back to your AI, which shows it to you in the chat. There are also two extra tools that check whether a piece of text is actually supported by your source documents.

What you can do with it

  • Ask questions and get answers drawn from your Vectara documents
  • Search your collections and get back the matching passages
  • Point a question at one or more specific collections
  • Check a piece of writing for claims that your sources do not support
  • Score how factually consistent a text is with your source documents
  • Set your Vectara key once per session so you do not retype it
  • Clear the stored key when you are done

Try asking your AI

  • “Search my Vectara corpus for our refund policy and summarise it”
  • “Using my product docs collection, what does the setup guide say about installation?”
  • “Check this paragraph against the two source documents and tell me if anything is made up”
  • “How factually consistent is this summary with the reports I gave you?”

What it gives back to you

You get back either a written answer with the passages it came from, or just the matching passages if you only asked for a search. The hallucination and consistency tools return a short report, including a corrected version of the text and a score. Everything shows up as normal text in your chat, so you can read it and copy it like any other reply.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Vectara account
  • A Vectara API key (a kind of password for apps; Vectara gives you one in your account settings)
  • The key names of the Vectara collections you want to search
  • Python installed if you run it yourself, or the Claude desktop app if you use it there

Good to know

The helper can read whatever is in the Vectara collections you point it at, so only connect collections you are comfortable having your AI search.

Install it with your AI

Add Vectara MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Vectara MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
