This is a helper that gives your AI hands on your own computer. It can open and change files, run commands in your terminal, and take screenshots of your screen. It is handy if you write code or work with files all day and want your AI to do the small, repetitive steps for you.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot touch your files or your computer. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill. This one connects your AI to your own machine, so it can look at files, run commands, and take screenshots when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something in plain words, like to show a file or run a command. The AI passes that request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper then opens the file, runs the command, or grabs a screenshot, and sends the result back. Your AI shows you the answer in the chat. You stay in control the whole time, because you are the one asking.

What you can do with it

  • View the contents of a file on your computer
  • Create a new file or write text into one
  • Replace a specific piece of text in a file
  • Undo the last edit it made
  • Run a shell command like ls, git status, or cargo test
  • Take a screenshot of your screen or a specific window
  • Load and show an image file from your disk
  • Track a multi-step task and branch off to try another way

Try asking your AI

  • “Show me the contents of /Users/me/projects/app/main.py”
  • “Create a file at /Users/me/notes/todo.txt with a short to-do list”
  • “Run git status in my project folder and tell me what changed”
  • “Take a screenshot of my main display”

What it gives back to you

You get back plain answers in the chat: the text of a file, the output of a command, a confirmation that a file was written or edited, or an image of your screen. For workflows, it returns a small status showing which step you are on. Everything shows up right where you are talking to your AI, so you do not have to switch apps.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude desktop app or another app that supports MCP
  • Rust 1.70 or newer, if you build it yourself
  • A Mac, Linux, or Windows computer

Good to know

This helper can change or delete files and run commands on your computer, so only use it on files and folders you are comfortable letting your AI touch.

Install it with your AI

Add Developer MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
