Longhand MCP server

by Wynelson94

Your AI can search and recall everything from your past Claude Code sessions, all stored on your own machine.

Longhand is a memory helper for Claude Code. It saves every message, file edit, and thought from your coding sessions into a database on your own computer, then lets you search that history with plain questions. It is handy if you use Claude Code often and want to remember what you did weeks ago.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat about what is in front of it right now. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. Longhand is that helper for your own Claude Code history: it reads the session files already on your disk and makes them searchable. When you ask about an old bug or decision, the AI uses Longhand to look it up and answer you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your past work, like a bug you fixed last week. The AI sends that question to Longhand. Longhand searches the local database of your old sessions, which it built by reading the files Claude Code already wrote. It finds the most relevant moments and sends them back. You get a short answer in the chat, with the exact session and details it found.

What you can do with it

  • Search all your past Claude Code sessions with a plain question
  • Recall a specific bug fix or decision from weeks ago
  • See a timeline of what happened in a single session
  • Check the history of changes to one file
  • List your projects and recent sessions
  • Find plans you wrote during past sessions
  • Replay a file's edits step by step

Try asking your AI

  • “Find that Stripe webhook bug I fixed last week and show me what I changed”
  • “What did I decide about the database migration in the auth project?”
  • “Show me the timeline of my session yesterday about the 401 error”
  • “Which files did I edit when I was working on the Supabase setup?”

What it gives back to you

You get a short written answer in the chat, pulled from your own session history. It often includes the session name, the date, and the exact lines or edits it found. For timelines or file history, you get a list of events in order. Nothing is sent to an outside service; the answer comes from your local database.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.10 or newer installed on your computer
  • Claude Code already used on this machine, so there are session files to read
  • The longhand package installed (pip install longhand)

Good to know

It reads your private Claude Code session files and stores them in a local database, so anyone with access to your computer could read that history.
