Databricks Genie MCP server

by yashshingvi

Ask your Databricks data questions in plain English and get answers with SQL and tables back.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “How many orders did we get last month?”, the Databricks Genie MCP server connects it to Databricks, and you get back answer with table and query.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Databricks Genie, the part of Databricks that answers questions about your data in plain language. Once it is set up, you can type a normal question in your AI chat and it will go ask Genie for you. It is handy for anyone who works with Databricks data but does not want to write SQL by hand every time.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one connects your AI to Databricks Genie, so when you ask a question about your data, the AI passes it along to Genie and brings the answer back into your chat. You do not need to understand how it works inside; you just talk to your AI like usual.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your Databricks data, like how many orders came in last month. The AI sends that question to this helper, and the helper talks to the Databricks Genie API using your workspace details. Genie figures out the right query, runs it, and sends back the SQL it used plus the result table. The helper passes all of that to your AI, which shows it to you in the chat. You can then ask a follow-up question and keep the same conversation going.

What you can do with it

  • Ask questions about your Databricks data in plain English
  • See the SQL that Genie wrote for your question
  • Get result tables back in your chat
  • Ask follow-up questions in the same Genie conversation
  • Look up the title and description of a Genie space
  • List the Genie space IDs you have configured

Try asking your AI

  • “How many orders did we get last month?”
  • “Show me the top 10 customers by revenue this year.”
  • “What was the average delivery time per region last quarter?”
  • “Follow up: break that down by product category.”

What it gives back to you

You get back the SQL query Genie used and a table of results, shown right in your chat. For follow-up questions, the answer builds on the same conversation, so you can keep digging. If you ask about a Genie space, you get its title and description. Everything comes back as text and tables you can read and copy.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.7 or newer on your computer
  • A Databricks workspace with Genie enabled
  • A Databricks personal access token (a kind of password you generate in your Databricks account settings)
  • Your Databricks host address, like your-instance.cloud.databricks.com

Good to know

Your Databricks token is a real password for your workspace, so keep the .env file private and never share or commit it.
