PostgreSQL MCP server
by antonorlov
Lets your AI look inside a PostgreSQL database: list tables, read rows, and run safe queries for you.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a PostgreSQL database. PostgreSQL is a common place where apps store their data, and this helper lets your AI read from it and answer questions about what is inside. It is handy for anyone who works with data but does not want to write SQL by hand.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your database or anything outside the conversation. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app or service. This one connects your AI to a PostgreSQL database, so when you ask a question, the AI can look things up there and bring the answer back to you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question about your data, like how many customers signed up last month. The AI uses this helper to send a read-only query to your PostgreSQL database. The helper runs the query and sends the rows back. Your AI then reads those rows and explains the answer to you in plain words. By default it can only read, not change anything.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List all the schemas and tables in your database
- Show you the columns and types of a specific table
- Run read-only queries and summarize the results
- Answer questions about your data without you writing SQL
- Count rows, find records, and spot trends
- Write changes like inserts or updates, only if you turn that on
Try asking your AI
- “List all the tables in my database”
- “Show me the structure of the users table”
- “How many orders were placed last week?”
- “Find the five most recent signups and show me their emails”
What it gives back to you
It gives back rows of data as a compact list, plus a count of how many rows came back. If the result is very large, it trims it and tells you it was trimmed, so you can ask for a smaller slice. Your AI then turns that into a normal answer in the chat, like a summary or a short table.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js 20 or newer installed on your computer
- A PostgreSQL database and its connection details (host, user, password, database name)
- A database user with read-only permissions, which is safer than using an admin account
Good to know
By default it can only read, but if you turn on write access it can change or delete data, so use a read-only database user and avoid pointing it at production.
Install it with your AI
Add PostgreSQL MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check PostgreSQL MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who works with a PostgreSQL database and wants to ask questions about the data without writing SQL, like analysts, support staff, or product managers.
