Honest Gmail MCP server
by bartosz-kuc
Let your AI search, read, send, and label your Gmail without sending your email through anyone else's server.
This is a small helper program that connects your AI assistant to your own Gmail account. It runs on your own computer, and it talks straight to Google. Nothing passes through a company in the middle. It is handy if you want an AI to help with email but you are not comfortable handing your inbox to a stranger.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives it a new skill, here the ability to work with your Gmail. Once connected, you ask your AI in normal words, and it uses this helper to look things up or do things in your mailbox. The difference here is that the helper lives on your machine and talks to Google directly, so no outside service sits in between.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your email, like find unread messages from your boss this week. Your AI passes that request to this server, which runs quietly on your computer. The server asks Google's Gmail service for the answer using your own login. Google sends back the messages or confirmation, and the server hands the result to your AI. Your AI then shows you a tidy answer in the chat.
What you can do with it
- Search your mailbox with Gmail search words like from: or is:unread
- Read the full text of a specific email
- Write and send a new email, with files from your computer attached
- Reply inside an existing email thread so it stays together
- Save a draft instead of sending it right away
- List all your Gmail labels with their names
- Add or remove labels on a message
What it gives back to you
It gives back ordinary things you would see in Gmail: a list of matching emails with sender and subject, the full text of one message, a list of your labels, or a short confirmation that a draft was saved or an email was sent.
Before you start
What you need
- Python 3.10 or newer on your computer
- A Google account you want to connect
- A one-time setup in Google Cloud Console to create your own credentials (about 10 minutes, the README walks you through it)
- An AI client that supports MCP, such as Claude Desktop or Claude Code
Good to know
It can send emails and change labels in your real inbox, so check what your AI is about to do before you say yes, especially for sending.
