by brave

Lets your AI search the web, news, images, and places through Brave Search.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to Brave Search, a search engine. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI to look things up on the web and it will actually go and find real, current results instead of guessing. It is handy for anyone who wants their AI to answer with fresh information from the internet.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat using what it already learned, so it cannot see today's news or check a website. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to Brave Search, so when you ask a question, the AI can send the search off to Brave and bring back real results. You do not need to understand how it works inside; you just ask, and the AI uses this helper behind the scenes.

What this MCP server does

You type a question or a topic into your AI, like you normally would. The AI notices it needs to look something up, so it asks this helper to search Brave. The helper sends your search words to Brave Search and gets back a list of matching pages, articles, videos, or images. Then the AI reads those results and writes an answer for you in the chat, often with links you can click. It can also narrow the search to recent news, a certain country, or a specific kind of result.

What you can do with it

  • Search the web for current information and get links back
  • Find recent news articles on a topic
  • Look up images and videos related to your search
  • Find local businesses and places, with ratings and hours
  • Get a short AI-written summary of what the web says about a topic
  • Filter results by country, language, or how recent they are
  • Turn off or tighten the safe search filter for results

Try asking your AI

  • “What are the latest news stories about electric cars this week?”
  • “Find me three good Italian restaurants in Chicago with their opening hours.”
  • “Search the web for the current price of a Nintendo Switch and show me the links.”
  • “Summarize what the web says about the best time to visit Japan.”

What it gives back to you

You get an answer written in the chat, usually with a list of links, titles, and short descriptions from the pages it found. For news and videos it can show dates and sources, and for places it can show addresses, hours, and ratings. If you ask for a summary, it gives you a short paragraph pulled from several sources. Everything shows up as normal text and links you can read or click.

Before you start

What you need

  • A Brave Search API account and an API key (a kind of password for apps; you get it free from the Brave developer dashboard, though some features need a paid plan)
  • The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers
  • Docker or Node.js installed, depending on which setup you choose

Good to know

Some features, like full local search and extra snippets, need a paid Brave plan, and every search uses your API key, which may count against your plan's limits.

Install it with your AI
