This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to Google News. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI for news and it will go and look it up for you. It is handy for anyone who wants quick news updates without opening a dozen tabs.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another service. This one connects your AI to Google News, so when you ask about a topic, your AI can actually go and search the news for you. You do not need to understand how it works inside, you just ask and it answers.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like what is happening with electric cars today. Your AI sends that request to this helper. The helper passes it to Google News through a service called SerpAPI, which is a paid tool that fetches search results. The news comes back and the helper sorts it into simple groups like Technology, Business, Science or Health. Your AI then shows you the headlines, sources and short summaries right in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Search Google News for any topic you type
  • Get headlines from a specific country or in a specific language
  • Pull news from one particular publication
  • Follow the full coverage of a single story
  • See results grouped into categories like tech, business or health
  • Ask for breaking news or the latest updates on a subject

Try asking your AI

  • “What is the latest news about artificial intelligence?”
  • “Show me business headlines from the UK today”
  • “Find recent articles about climate change from the BBC”
  • “Give me the full coverage of the election story”

What it gives back to you

You get a list of news articles in the chat. Each one usually shows the title, the source, the date, a short snippet and a link. The results are grouped into categories so it is easy to scan. If something goes wrong, you get a plain message explaining what happened.

Before you start

What you need

  • A SerpAPI account and API key (a kind of password for apps; the site gives you one when you sign up, with 250 free searches per month)
  • The Claude desktop app or another AI tool that supports MCP servers
  • Node.js installed on your computer if you set it up manually

Good to know

SerpAPI has a free limit of 250 searches per month, and after that it costs money, so keep an eye on how often you ask.

Install it with your AI
