EU VAT rates MCP server
by duty27 · official
Your AI can look up the standard VAT rate for any EU country on any date since 2016.
This is a small helper that lets your AI tell you the standard VAT rate in any EU country on any date since 1 January 2016. It is handy if you deal with invoices, prices or orders across Europe and keep needing to check what rate applied at the time. It works offline, needs no account, and comes from the same people who publish the rate data.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program you connect to your AI that gives it one new skill. This helper gives your AI a connection to a set of EU VAT rate data, so when you ask about a rate, your AI can look it up instead of guessing. You ask in normal words, and the helper quietly fetches the answer.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like the standard VAT rate in Germany in July 2020. Your AI passes the country and the date to this helper. The helper looks the date up in its own copy of the rate data, which covers all 27 EU member states back to 1 January 2016. It hands the number back to your AI, and your AI tells you the rate in the chat. It only looks rates up, it does not work out tax amounts for you.
What you can do with it
- Look up the standard VAT rate for any EU country on a chosen date
- Check temporary rate changes, like Germany's 16% in the second half of 2020
- Compare the standard rate across several EU countries
- Find the rate that applied on an old invoice date
- See the rate for any date going back to 1 January 2016
Try asking your AI
- “What was the standard VAT rate in Germany on 1 July 2020?”
- “What is the standard VAT rate in Spain today?”
- “List the standard VAT rate in France, Italy and the Netherlands for 15 March 2019”
- “Did any EU country change its standard VAT rate in 2021?”
What it gives back to you
You get a short answer in the chat, usually the country, the date and the rate as a number, like 16 for Germany in July 2020. If you ask about several countries, you get a small list. It does not produce files or make changes anywhere, it just answers your question.

What you need

Good to know
It only covers standard VAT rates, not reduced rates, and it does not calculate tax, so treat the answers as information rather than tax advice.
