GreptimeDB MCP server
by GreptimeTeam
Lets your AI ask questions about your GreptimeDB data in plain words and get answers back.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to GreptimeDB, a database that stores things like server metrics, logs, and traces. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI questions about that data in normal language instead of writing database queries yourself. It is handy for anyone who works with monitoring or system data but does not want to learn query syntax.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one connects your AI to GreptimeDB, so the AI can look things up there for you. You just ask a question, and the AI uses this helper behind the scenes to fetch the answer.
What this MCP server does
You type a question to your AI, like how many errors happened today. The AI turns that into a database query and sends it through this helper. The helper talks to your GreptimeDB and runs the query. Then it hands the results back to the AI, which explains them to you in the chat. It can also help you look at table structures, test pipelines, and check that the database connection is working.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Ask questions about your metrics, logs, and traces in plain words
- Run SQL queries and get results as a table, CSV, or JSON
- Run time-series queries to see how something changed over time
- Look up what a table contains and see sample rows
- Check whether the database is reachable and what version it runs
- Test a data pipeline with sample data before it goes live
- List and manage dashboards stored in the database
Try asking your AI
- “How many errors did we get in the last hour?”
- “Show me the busiest servers today as a table.”
- “What columns does the cpu table have?”
- “Is the database connection working right now?”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, usually as a short explanation plus a table of results. Depending on what you ask, it can return lists of tables, sample rows, counts, or summaries of how something changed over time. If you ask it to change something, it tells you what it did.
Before you start
What you need
- A GreptimeDB database you can connect to (host, port, database name)
- A username and password for that database
- Python installed on your computer (the page says pip install)
- The Claude desktop app or another AI tool that supports MCP servers
Good to know
It reads your database by default, but if someone turns on write mode it can also change or delete data, so keep write mode off on real data.
Install it with your AI
Add GreptimeDB MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check GreptimeDB MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who work with monitoring, logs, or system data and want to ask questions about it without writing queries by hand.
