lore is a small helper that lets your AI search through your past Claude Code and OpenAI Codex CLI conversations. If you have weeks or months of coding chats and can't remember where you talked about something, this finds it for you. It is handy for anyone who uses those coding assistants a lot and wants to look back at old decisions, bugs, or ideas.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat about what is in front of it right now. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one, lore, connects your AI to your saved coding conversations on your own computer. Once it is connected, your AI can look things up in those old chats for you when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like what did we decide about the login system. Your AI passes that question to lore. lore reads the saved conversation files on your machine, searches them by meaning and by exact words, and picks the best matches. Then your AI shows you the answers in the chat, with the project name and date so you know where it came from. All of this happens on your computer, and nothing is sent anywhere.

What you can do with it

  • Search all your past Claude Code and Codex CLI conversations at once
  • Find discussions by meaning, not just exact keywords
  • Filter results to one project or one agent
  • Expand a result to see the surrounding conversation
  • Browse your indexed sessions by project
  • Exclude noisy projects you do not want searched
  • Check indexing progress and database health

Try asking your AI

  • “What did we discuss about the auth refactoring last week?”
  • “Which project had that database migration conversation?”
  • “Find where I debugged the login timeout issue”
  • “Show me my recent sessions in the my-webapp project”

What it gives back to you

You get back a short list of matching conversations, each with the project name, the date, and a snippet of what was said. If you want more, you can ask it to expand a result and see the fuller back and forth. Sometimes it also gives you a quick summary of the decision or answer it found. Everything shows up right in your chat window.

Before you start

What you need

  • Claude Code or OpenAI Codex CLI, with some past conversations saved
  • The Claude desktop app or another tool that supports MCP servers

Good to know

It reads your saved coding conversations on your computer, so be aware it can see anything you typed in those sessions.
