Weather MCP server

by isdaniel

Lets your AI look up live weather, air quality, and local times for cities around the world.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “What is the weather in Tokyo right now?”, the Weather MCP server connects it to Open-Meteo, and you get back A plain weather report.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to a free weather service called Open-Meteo. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI about the weather or air quality in a city, and it will go and fetch real numbers for you. It is handy for anyone who plans trips, schedules outdoor work, or just wants to know if they need an umbrella.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to Open-Meteo, a free weather and air quality service. So when you ask about the weather in a city, your AI can actually go and check instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like what is the weather in Tokyo right now. Your AI passes that question to this helper program. The helper then talks to the Open-Meteo service over the internet and pulls back the current conditions. It can also fetch a range of days, air quality readings, and local times for different timezones. Your AI then writes the answer back to you in plain language in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Check the current weather in any city, including temperature, wind, humidity, and UV index
  • Get a day by day or hour by hour forecast for a date range
  • Look up air quality and pollution levels for a city
  • See health advice tied to the air quality reading
  • Find the current date and time in any timezone
  • Convert a time from one timezone to another
  • Get sunrise and sunset times for a location

Try asking your AI

  • “What is the weather like in Paris right now?”
  • “Give me the forecast for New York from 2024-06-01 to 2024-06-07.”
  • “How is the air quality in Beijing today?”
  • “What time is it in Tokyo right now, and what time is that in London?”

What it gives back to you

You get back a written answer in the chat, like a short weather report with temperature, wind, humidity, and other details. For forecasts, you get a summary of trends across the days you asked about, plus notes like whether rain is likely. Air quality questions come back with pollutant numbers and a plain health note. Time questions come back with the current time or the converted time.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python installed on your computer
  • The mcp_weather_server package installed with pip
  • An MCP client like Claude Desktop or Cline to connect it to

Good to know

It only reads public weather, air quality, and time data, so there is nothing risky to change or delete, but city names must be in English for the lookups to work.

Install it with your AI
