Filesystem MCP server
by j0hanz
Lets your AI look through folders and files you allow, and make changes when you ask.

This is a small helper that lets your AI assistant actually open and read the files on your computer, but only inside folders you say are okay. You point it at a folder, and from then on you can ask your AI things like what is in there or what a file says. It is handy for anyone who works with a pile of documents, notes, or code and wants the AI to help sort through them.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your files or click around your computer. An MCP server is a little helper program that gives your AI a new skill, and this one gives it the skill of reading and writing files in folders you choose. You install it once, tell it which folders are allowed, and then your AI can look things up there when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your files, like what is in a folder or what a document says. The AI passes that request to this helper. The helper checks that the folder is one you allowed, opens the file or folder, and reads what is inside. It sends the answer back to your AI, which shows it to you in the chat. If you ask it to change or create a file, it does that too, but only inside your allowed folders.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List what is inside a folder
- Find files by name or pattern
- Read a file, or just the top or bottom of it
- Search inside files for a word or phrase
- Compare two files and show what is different
- Create, edit, move, or delete files you allow
- Do a find-and-replace across many files at once
Try asking your AI
- “What files are in my Documents folder?”
- “Find every file ending in .txt in my notes folder”
- “Read the first 20 lines of budget.txt”
- “Search my project folder for the word invoice”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain chat: a list of file names, the text of a file, matching lines from a search, or a short summary of what changed. When it edits or creates files, it tells you what it did. Everything shows up as normal text in the conversation, so you can read it right there.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js version 24 or newer (a free program that runs this helper)
- The folder path you want to allow, for example /Users/you/Documents
- An AI app that supports MCP, like Claude Desktop, VS Code, or Cursor
Good to know
It can change, move, or permanently delete files, so only allow folders you are comfortable letting your AI touch, and consider the read-only mode if you just want it to look.
Install it with your AI
Add Filesystem MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Filesystem MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who keeps a lot of files, notes, or documents on their computer and wants an AI to help read, search, and tidy them up.
