Memory MCP server

by JamesANZ

Give your AI a lasting memory of past chats, saved in a database you control.

This is a small helper that lets your AI remember things between conversations. It saves notes and past chat context into a database called MongoDB, then brings them back when they are useful. It is handy if you have long projects and you are tired of repeating yourself every time you open a new chat.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. It forgets everything the moment you close the window. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, and this one gives it a memory. Here, the helper connects your AI to a MongoDB database, so it can save what you told it and look it up again later.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI something worth remembering, like your preferences or the details of a project. The AI passes that to this helper, and the helper writes it into your MongoDB database. Later, in a new chat, you can ask the AI to recall those notes, and the helper fetches them back. It can also archive long conversations when they get too big, tag them, and pull out the parts that matter later. Everything stays on your own machine and in your own database.

What you can do with it

  • Save notes and facts your AI should remember
  • Add new memories without wiping the old ones
  • Retrieve everything you have saved so far
  • Archive a long conversation with tags
  • Search archived context by tag
  • Create summaries of past conversations
  • Clear all stored memories when you want a fresh start

Try asking your AI

  • “Remember that I prefer TypeScript and I am working on a blockchain project.”
  • “What do you remember about my coding preferences?”
  • “Archive this conversation under the tags research and pricing.”
  • “Find any past context tagged coding and summarize it for me.”

What it gives back to you

You get your memories back as a list of short notes, and archived context comes back as the matching pieces of past conversations. Summaries show up as a few condensed paragraphs in the chat. When it saves or clears something, it just tells you it is done.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js 18 or newer
  • MongoDB running somewhere you can reach (a local install works)
  • The connection string for that database, usually mongodb://localhost:27017
  • Claude Desktop or Cursor if you want the easy setup

Good to know

Saving memories overwrites what was there before, and clearing memories deletes everything, so keep a backup of anything you cannot lose.

Install it with your AI

Add Memory MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Memory MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
