Agent Web Search is a helper that gives your AI a real web search skill. Instead of guessing from memory, your AI can look things up online and show you where the information came from. It is handy if you often ask your AI about news, prices, or facts you want to double-check.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one connects your AI to web search services, so when you ask a question it can go look things up and bring back results. You do not need to understand how it works inside; you just connect it once and then ask questions as usual.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a normal question, like what happened in the news today. Your AI passes that question to this helper, which sends it out to one or more search services. Those services send back pages, short excerpts, and sometimes a written answer with sources. The helper tidies everything into one clean list, and your AI shows it to you in the chat. You can also tell it to only look at the past day, week, month, or year.

What you can do with it

  • Search the web with a full question instead of just keywords
  • Get a short answer plus the sources it came from
  • Limit results to the past day, week, month, or year
  • Ask for up to 20 results at a time
  • Pick which search services to use for a question
  • Use it without any paid account, since some services are free

What it gives back to you

You get back a list of results, each with a title, a link, and a short excerpt of the page. Some search services also return a written answer with citations, so you can see exactly where the facts came from. Everything shows up right in your chat as text you can read and click. If a search service fails, the others still bring back their results.

Before you start

What you need

  • Python 3.10 or newer on your computer
  • Nothing else for the free search services (no account or key needed)
  • Optional: an API key (a kind of password for apps) from a paid search service if you want to use it

Good to know

Only use search services you trust, and keep any API keys private since they are like passwords for your accounts.
