JetBrains MCP server
by JetBrains · official
Let your AI work with your JetBrains IDE like IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm and Android Studio.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to your JetBrains coding app, such as IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm or Android Studio. It is handy if you already use one of those apps and want your AI to look at your project or make changes without you copying things back and forth. Note that JetBrains has folded this into the apps themselves since version 2025.2, so this separate package is no longer maintained.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one connects your AI to your JetBrains IDE, so the AI can look things up or do things inside your project when you ask. You stay in the chat, and the helper quietly passes your request to the IDE.
What this MCP server does
You type a request in your AI chat, like asking it to look at a file or check something in your project. The AI sends that request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper talks to your JetBrains IDE, which does the actual work. Then the answer comes back through the helper into your chat, so you see the result without leaving the conversation.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Look at files in your open project
- Check what is currently open in your IDE
- Ask your AI about code in your project
- Make changes to your project through the chat
- Run tasks inside your JetBrains IDE
- Connect your AI to IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm or Android Studio
Try asking your AI
- “What files are open in my IDE right now?”
- “Show me the contents of the main file in my project”
- “Add a comment at the top of this file explaining what it does”
- “Find where this function is used in my project”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in your chat, like lists of files, short summaries, or the text of a file. If the AI makes a change, you will see what it changed and the IDE will show the updated file. It feels like talking to a colleague who is sitting in your editor.
Before you start
What you need
- A JetBrains IDE such as IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm or Android Studio
- The MCP Server plugin installed in that IDE (free from the JetBrains plugin page)
- Node.js version 18 or newer on your computer
- The Claude desktop app or VS Code, depending on where you want to use it
Good to know
This helper can read and change files in your open project, so only connect it to projects you are happy for your AI to touch.
Install it with your AI
Add JetBrains MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check JetBrains MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Developers and anyone who codes in a JetBrains IDE and wants their AI assistant to work directly with their project.
