mcp-devtools server
by marin1321
Lets your AI safely read files, query databases, and run approved commands in your local project.

This is a helper program that connects your AI assistant to your own computer's development setup. It lets the AI look at your project files, peek at your database, and run certain commands you allow. It is handy for developers who want their AI to actually see and work with their code instead of just chatting about it.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your files or your database. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something. This one connects your AI to your local development environment, so it can look things up and do things there when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question about your project, like what is in a file or what tables your database has. Your AI sends that request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper checks whether the request is allowed by your rules, then talks to your files, database, or terminal. It sends the answer back to your AI, and your AI explains it to you in the chat.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Read and search files inside a folder you choose
- List tables and describe the structure of your database
- Run read-only database queries and see the results
- Run commands from a list you approve, like tests or builds
- Read environment variables with secrets automatically hidden
- Look at API definitions and call allowed API endpoints
- Write files inside your allowed folder when you ask
Try asking your AI
- “What files are in my src folder?”
- “Show me the tables in my local database and what columns they have.”
- “Run the test command and tell me what failed.”
- “Read my package.json and explain what scripts I have.”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain language in your chat. That might be a list of files, a table of database rows, the output of a command, or a summary of what the AI found. If the AI changed a file, it will tell you what it wrote.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js 18 or newer installed on your computer
- A project folder you want the AI to work in
- A config file that sets which folder, commands, and database are allowed
Good to know
This helper can read and change files and run commands on your computer, so set a narrow allowed folder and a short command list before you use it.
Install it with your AI
Add mcp-devtools server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check mcp-devtools server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Developers and technical teams who want their AI assistant to work directly with their local code, database, and terminal.
