Filesystem MCP server

by mark3labs

Lets your AI read, search, and edit files in folders you allow on your own computer.

This is a small helper program that gives your AI assistant access to files on your computer, but only inside folders you choose. It is handy if you keep notes, drafts, or reports in folders and want your AI to read or tidy them up for you. You stay in control of which folders it can touch.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill or one new connection. This one connects your AI to folders on your own computer, so it can open files, look inside them, and make changes when you ask. You decide which folders it is allowed to see.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI something like "read the notes in my Projects folder and summarize them." Your AI sends that request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper checks that the folder is one you allowed, then reads the files and sends the content back. Your AI then writes the summary or makes the change you asked for. Everything stays on your machine, and it can only reach the folders you listed when you set it up.

What you can do with it

  • Read one file or many files at once
  • Create new files or overwrite existing ones
  • Search for files by name across folders
  • Search for text inside many files
  • Copy, move, or rename files and folders
  • Delete files or folders (careful, this is permanent)
  • Show a tree view of a folder structure

Try asking your AI

  • “List everything in my Documents/Reports folder and tell me what is there”
  • “Search all my notes for the word budget and show me the matching lines”
  • “Create a new file called meeting-notes.txt in my Work folder with a short summary of our chat”
  • “Find every file with draft in the name under my Projects folder”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat: file contents, lists of files, search results, or a tree view of a folder. When it makes a change, like creating or editing a file, it tells you what it did. For images or other non-text files it can pass the file along too, within size limits.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Go programming language installed if you build it yourself, or Docker if you prefer that route
  • The full path to each folder you want to allow, for example /Users/you/Documents
  • An AI app that supports MCP, like Claude Desktop

Good to know

It can delete or overwrite files, so only allow folders you are comfortable with and double-check before saying yes to a delete.

Install it with your AI

Add Filesystem MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Filesystem MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
