Memory MCP server

by michael-denyer

Give your AI a lasting memory of your project, so you stop re-explaining things every new chat.

Memory MCP is a small helper that gives your AI assistant a memory that survives between chats. It keeps the facts and patterns you use most right in front of the AI, and lets it search the rest by meaning when needed. It is handy if you keep re-explaining the same project details over and over.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with what is in the current conversation. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one connects your AI to a memory store that lives on your own computer, so it can save things you tell it and look them up later. When you ask about your project, the AI can pull the right notes back instead of guessing.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI something worth keeping, like a project rule or a pattern you use often. The AI sends that to this helper, which saves it with a meaning-based label so it can be found later by topic, not just exact words. Next time you ask something related, the AI searches the saved notes and brings back the closest matches. Frequently used notes get promoted so they appear automatically at the start of a session, without the AI having to search. Notes you stop using fade over time, and related notes can be linked together so the AI can follow connections.

What you can do with it

  • Save a fact or pattern so your AI remembers it next time
  • Search your saved notes by meaning, not just keywords
  • See which notes are being used most and keep them handy
  • Seed memories from your project documents in one go
  • Link related notes together so the AI can follow connections
  • Check statistics about what is stored and what is being used
  • Browse everything in a simple web dashboard

Try asking your AI

  • “Remember that our API returns errors in this format: code, message, details.”
  • “What do you know about how we handle user logins in this project?”
  • “Show me my memory stats.”
  • “Bootstrap memories from the docs folder in this project.”

What it gives back to you

You get back short answers or lists pulled from your saved notes, shown right in the chat. When you save something, the AI confirms it was stored. When you search, you see the closest matching notes with a short summary of each. The dashboard shows the same information in a browsable page if you prefer to look around.

Before you start

What you need

  • The Claude Code app (the plugin works best with it)
  • Python installed on your computer, with the uv or pip tool
  • About 90MB of free space for the embedding model, which downloads on first run

Good to know

It saves notes on your own computer, so anything private you ask it to remember will be stored there in a local file.

Install it with your AI

Add Memory MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Memory MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
