Filesystem MCP server
Lets your AI read, search, and edit files in folders you choose on your own computer.

This is a small helper that lets your AI assistant work with files on your own computer. You pick which folders it may touch, and then you can ask it to read, search, or tidy up files for you. It is handy for anyone who deals with lots of documents, notes, or spreadsheets and wants help without copying and pasting everything by hand.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat. It cannot see your computer or open a file. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI one new skill, and this one gives it a connection to folders on your machine. Once it is connected, the AI can look inside those folders and do things there when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You tell your AI what you want, like finding a file or reading a document. The AI passes that request to this helper program. The helper then looks inside the folders you allowed and does the work, such as reading a file, listing a folder, or making a change. The result comes back to the AI, and the AI explains it to you in the chat. It only ever touches the folders you gave it permission to use.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Read the contents of a text file
- List what is inside a folder, with file sizes
- Search folders for files matching a name or pattern
- Create new files and folders
- Make small edits inside an existing file
- Move or rename files and folders
- Show details about a file, like its size and dates
Try asking your AI
- “List everything in my Documents folder and tell me which files are biggest”
- “Read the file notes.txt and summarize it for me”
- “Find all files in my Projects folder that end in .md”
- “Create a new folder called Reports and move last month's files into it”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain chat: lists of files, the text of a document, a summary, or details like size and dates. When it makes a change, it tells you what it did, such as creating a file or moving one. For edits, it can show you a preview of the change before applying it.
Before you start
What you need
- The Claude desktop app or another app that supports MCP servers
- Node.js installed on your computer (the free program that runs this helper)
- The full path of at least one folder you want to allow, like your Documents folder
Good to know
It can change, overwrite, or move files in the folders you allow, so give it only folders you are comfortable with and ask for a preview before big edits.
Install it with your AI
Add Filesystem MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Filesystem MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who works with lots of files on their computer and wants an AI to help read, search, or organize them, without any technical setup knowledge.
