Ringback is a helper that lets your AI assistant actually phone you. Instead of just typing a message on your screen, it can ring your phone, talk to you out loud, and listen to what you say back. It is handy if you step away from your desk but still want your AI to reach you when something needs a decision.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you in a text box. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one connects your AI to a phone line, so it can ring your phone and hold a spoken conversation with you. You set it up once, and after that your AI can call you whenever you ask it to.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI to get in touch with you, and it uses this helper to place a call to your phone. The helper rings you through a free internet phone service called Linphone. When you pick up and talk, it turns your voice into text, your AI reads that text and decides what to say, then it speaks the reply back to you. You can talk over it at any time to interrupt, and it stops and listens. When you are done, it hangs up.

What you can do with it

  • Receive a real phone call from your AI and talk back and forth
  • Interrupt your AI mid-sentence by simply talking over it
  • Get a loud push notification when your AI decides something is urgent
  • Ask your AI to read back the full transcript of a call
  • Have your AI call you about a failed task and offer to fix it
  • Send yourself a test alert to check that everything is working

Try asking your AI

  • “Call me and tell me my nightly backup failed.”
  • “Ring my phone and ask me whether to retry the deployment.”
  • “Send me an urgent alert that the report is ready.”
  • “Call me and walk me through what went wrong today.”

What it gives back to you

During a call, you hear your AI speak out loud and it hears you reply. In the chat window, your AI can pull up the full transcript of the conversation, showing both what it said and what you said, including any point where you interrupted. For plain alerts, you get a notification on your phone or a short ring plus a chat message. Everything stays in your chat, so you can read back what happened later.

Before you start

What you need

  • A free Linphone account (a free internet phone line; you sign up at subscribe.linphone.org)
  • The Linphone app installed on your phone and signed in
  • Your computer awake and online, with a Claude session running during the call
  • Docker, or a Mac, Linux, or Windows-with-WSL2 computer to run the setup

Good to know

Your computer must stay awake and online, and a Claude session must be running for the whole call, otherwise the call cannot happen.
