JDBC Database MCP server

by OpenLinkSoftware

Lets your AI look inside your database: list tables, describe them, and run SQL queries for you.

This is a small helper program that connects your AI assistant to a database. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI things like "what tables are in this database?" or "show me the last ten orders" and it will go and find out. It is handy for anyone who works with data but does not want to write SQL by hand every time.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. This one gives your AI a connection to a database, through something called JDBC, which is a standard way for programs to talk to databases. So when you ask a question about your data, the AI sends the request through this helper, and the helper talks to the database for you.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI a question about your data in plain words. The AI turns that into a database request and hands it to this helper. The helper connects to your database using JDBC and runs the request. The database sends back rows of information, and the helper passes them to your AI. Your AI then shows you the answer, either as a list, a table, or a short summary.

What you can do with it

  • List all the schemas in your database
  • List the tables in a schema
  • Describe a table, including its columns, data types, and keys
  • Search for tables whose names contain a word you give
  • Run a SQL query and get the results back
  • Get query results as a neat Markdown table
  • Run stored procedures and special Virtuoso queries

Try asking your AI

  • “What tables are in my database?”
  • “Describe the customers table for me.”
  • “Find all tables with the word order in the name.”
  • “Run this query and show me the results as a table: SELECT * FROM orders LIMIT 10”

What it gives back to you

You get back answers in the chat. Sometimes that is a simple list, like the names of your tables or schemas. Sometimes it is a table of rows from a query, shown either as a Markdown table or as structured data. For describing a table, you get the column names, their types, and which ones are keys.

Before you start

What you need

  • Java 21 or newer installed on your computer
  • The MCP server file (MCPServer-1.0.0-runner.jar) built or downloaded from the project
  • A database you can connect to, plus its JDBC connection details (URL, username, password)
  • The JDBC driver file for your database, if it is not Virtuoso

Good to know

This server can run queries that change or delete data in your database, so be careful with what you ask it to do and check before letting it modify anything.

Install it with your AI

Add JDBC Database MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check JDBC Database MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.

Who it's for

Anyone who works with a database and wants to ask questions in plain words instead of writing SQL, especially analysts, support staff, and developers using Virtuoso or another JDBC database.
