Cloud FinOps MCP server
by OptimNow
Your AI can look up plain-English cloud cost guides and waste-detection playbooks for AWS, Azure, GCP and more.
This is a read-only library of cloud cost knowledge that your AI assistant can search while you chat. It covers how cloud bills actually work, plus ready-made playbooks for spotting wasted spend. It is handy if you deal with cloud costs and want a knowledgeable helper in the conversation.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something useful. This one connects your AI to a curated FinOps reference library, so it can look things up on demand instead of guessing. You ask a question, and the AI fetches the right guide from the library for you.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about cloud costs, like why a bill is high or how commitments work. The AI decides to use this helper, which searches a bundled library of FinOps guides. The helper returns the matching reference or playbook, and the AI explains it back to you in the chat. No cloud login is needed, because the content is stored inside the package itself. It is read-only, so it never changes anything in your accounts.
What you can do with it
- Look up how AWS, Azure, GCP or OCI billing mechanics work
- Find waste-detection playbooks for idle, overprovisioned or forgotten resources
- Get guidance on commitments like savings plans and reservations
- Learn how allocation, showback and chargeback are set up
- Understand AI inference costs across managed and self-hosted models
- Browse Kubernetes and data platform cost topics
- Filter the library by FinOps Framework capability
Try asking your AI
- “Show me the runbook for idle waste in AWS”
- “How do Azure reservations differ from AWS savings plans?”
- “What should I check first when my cloud bill jumps?”
- “Explain how chargeback works and what Finance needs to set it up”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat, grounded in the library's guides and playbooks. It can hand back lists of matching references, short summaries, or step-by-step playbook content. For questions about your own accounts, it gives you a detection query you run yourself. It does not return live prices or your actual bill figures.
Before you start
What you need
- An MCP-compatible AI client, such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Cursor
- Python 3.10 or newer if you install it yourself with uvx or pip
- Nothing else: no cloud account or credentials are required
Good to know
It is read-only and cannot see your cloud account, so for questions about your own spend it can only give you a query to run yourself.
Install it with your AI
