GOV.UK MCP server
by paulieb89
Lets your AI search GOV.UK pages, read government content, look up organisations and check UK postcodes.

This is a small helper that connects your AI to GOV.UK, the UK government's public website. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI questions about government pages, departments and UK postcodes, and it will go and look things up for you. It is handy for anyone who has to dig through gov.uk pages for work.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already learned. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to GOV.UK, so when you ask about a government page or a postcode, the AI can go and fetch the real, current information instead of guessing. You do not need to install anything complicated; the helper runs quietly in the background.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI a question, like what a certain gov.uk page says or which council covers a postcode. The AI passes that request to this helper. The helper then talks to the official GOV.UK search and content services, or to a postcode lookup service, and pulls back the matching information. The AI reads the answer and shows it to you in the chat, usually as a short summary or a list. It can also dig into a specific section of a long page if you want just one part.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Search across hundreds of thousands of GOV.UK pages by keyword
- Read the main content of a specific government page
- Pull out just one section of a long page
- Find a word or phrase inside a single GOV.UK page
- Look up details about a government department or public body
- List government organisations on GOV.UK
- Turn a UK postcode into the local council, region and NHS board
Try asking your AI
- “Search GOV.UK for guidance about self assessment tax returns”
- “What does the gov.uk page on student finance say about repayment?”
- “Which local authority covers the postcode SW1A 1AA?”
- “Tell me about the Department for Work and Pensions”
What it gives back to you
You get answers in the chat: a short summary, a list of matching pages with titles and links, or the text of a section you asked about. For a postcode, you get the council, region, constituency and NHS board. For an organisation, you get its type, parent body and contact details. Nothing is changed on GOV.UK; it only reads.
Before you start
Good to know
It only reads public GOV.UK data, so it cannot change or delete anything, but always double-check important details against the official page before relying on them.
