Filesystem MCP server
by quarkiverse
Let your AI look at and edit files in folders you choose on your own computer.

This is a small helper that lets your AI assistant see and change files on your computer, but only inside the folders you allow. It is handy if you work with lots of documents, notes or code and want your AI to help you find, read or tidy them up. You stay in control because you pick which folders it can touch.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something else. This one connects your AI to the files on your computer, so it can look things up or make changes when you ask. You install it once, point it at the folders you trust, and then just talk to your AI like normal.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something about your files, like reading a document or listing what is in a folder. The AI passes your request to this helper program running on your computer. The helper looks at the folders you allowed and does the work, such as opening a file, listing names, or saving an edit. Then the result comes back to your AI, which explains it to you in the chat. Everything happens locally on your machine, not on some faraway server.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- List the files and folders inside a folder you allowed
- Read the contents of a text file and summarise it for you
- Create a new file with text your AI wrote
- Edit or update an existing file
- Search through files to find a word or phrase
- Move or rename files inside the allowed folders
- Delete a file you no longer need
What it gives back to you
You get answers in plain chat, like a list of file names, the text of a file, or a short summary your AI writes for you. When the helper creates or changes a file, your AI tells you what it did and where. You can always open the folder yourself to double check.
Before you start
What you need
- The jbang tool installed on your computer (a free program that runs Java apps easily)
- Java, which jbang can set up for you automatically
- The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers
- The list of folders you want to give your AI access to
Good to know
This helper can read, change and delete files in the folders you allow, so only point it at folders you are comfortable letting your AI touch and keep backups of anything important.
Install it with your AI
Add Filesystem MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Filesystem MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
Anyone who works with lots of local files, like writers, researchers, students, or developers, and wants their AI to help read and organise them.
