Reddit MCP server

by redditapis

Lets your AI search Reddit, read posts and comments, and check subreddit rules for you.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to Reddit, so it can look things up there for you. You ask a question in plain words, and your AI goes and reads Reddit to answer it. It is handy if you research topics, follow communities, or want to know what people are saying before you post.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to Reddit, so it can search posts, read comment threads, and check community details when you ask. You do not install anything yourself; the helper runs quietly in the background and your AI calls on it as needed.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something about Reddit, like what people are saying about a topic or what a community's top posts are this week. Your AI passes that request to this helper, which talks to the Reddit API service using your key. The service fetches the posts, comments, or community details and sends them back. Your AI then reads them and gives you a plain answer in the chat. Everything here is read-only, so it never posts, comments, or votes on Reddit for you.

What you can do with it

  • Search Reddit for posts about any topic
  • Read a subreddit's top, new, or hot posts
  • Pull a post and its full comment thread
  • Look up a user's profile, posts, and comments
  • Find subreddits by name or topic
  • Check a subreddit's rules before you post
  • Search comments to find who is talking about something

Try asking your AI

  • “What are people saying about standing desks this month?”
  • “Show me the top posts in r/programming this week.”
  • “Find subreddits about home coffee brewing.”
  • “What are the rules of r/personalfinance?”

What it gives back to you

You get back plain answers in your chat: lists of posts with titles, scores, and links, or summaries of what people said. If you ask about a user, you get their karma, account age, and recent activity. If you ask about a community, you get its description, subscriber count, and rules. Your AI reads all of it and tells you what matters.

Before you start

What you need

  • An API key from redditapis.com (a kind of password the site gives you)
  • The Claude desktop app or another app that supports MCP servers
  • Nothing else for reading; monitor and webhook features need a paid plan
