Transcriptor is a helper that lets your AI assistant read videos for you. Instead of watching a long clip yourself, you paste the link and ask for a summary, the subtitles, or the details about who posted it. It is handy for anyone who deals with a lot of video links, like researchers, marketers, or students.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to video platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Once it is connected, your AI can look up a video and bring back the text, the details, or a picture from it when you ask.
What this MCP server does
You paste a video link into your chat and ask a question. Your AI sends that link to the Transcriptor helper. The helper goes to the video platform, pulls out the captions, the metadata, or a single frame, and hands it back to your AI. Your AI then writes the answer for you, like a summary or a list of chapters. For very long videos, the text comes back in parts so nothing gets cut off.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Summarize a video from its transcript
- Get the subtitles as a plain text or SRT file
- Check which languages a video has captions in
- See who published a video and how many views it has
- Jump to a chapter by asking about a topic
- Grab a single frame from a specific moment
- Pull transcripts from the first few videos in a playlist
- Search YouTube for recent videos about a topic
Try asking your AI
- “Summarize this video for me: [link]”
- “Give me the subtitles as an SRT file for this video”
- “Show me the screen at 4:12 in this video”
- “Get English transcripts for the first 5 videos in this playlist”
What it gives back to you
You get back text, lists, numbers, or an image, depending on what you asked. A summary comes back as a short paragraph in the chat. Subtitles come back as text or as a file you can save. Metadata comes back as a list of details like the channel name, view count, and upload date. A frame comes back as a picture in the chat.
Before you start
What you need
- A Claude, ChatGPT, or Codex account (for the hosted version)
- Nothing else for the hosted version, it signs you in through the browser
Good to know
The server does not download video or audio files, it only returns text, metadata, and single frames, so it will not give you the video itself.
