This is a small helper that lets your AI assistant look up the current status of cloud services and APIs. You ask a plain question like "is GitHub down right now?" and it goes and checks for you. It is handy if you rely on tools like Stripe, Slack, OpenAI or AWS and want a quick answer without opening a dozen status pages.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to apistatuscheck.com, a site that tracks the live status of 285 cloud services and APIs. Once it is connected, your AI can ask that site what is up or down and tell you the answer in the chat.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like "is OpenAI having issues?" The AI passes that request to this helper, which talks to apistatuscheck.com. The site checks its live data for that service and sends back the current status. Your AI then explains it to you in normal words, for example that the service is operating normally or that there is an outage. You can also ask it to check a whole group of services at once, like all the payment tools you use.

What you can do with it

  • Check whether a specific service like GitHub, Stripe or OpenAI is up right now
  • List all the services it tracks along with their current status
  • See which categories of services exist, such as cloud or payments
  • Check every service in one category at once
  • Check any public web address to see if it is reachable
  • Get a quick answer before you start debugging something that may not be your fault

Try asking your AI

  • “Is GitHub down right now?”
  • “Check the status of Stripe and OpenAI for me”
  • “Show me all the payment services and whether they are working”
  • “Can you check if https://example.com is reachable?”

What it gives back to you

You get a short answer in the chat, usually saying whether the service is up, degraded or having an outage. If you ask for a list, you get a list of service names with their current status next to each one. If you check a category, you get the same kind of list but only for that group. If you check a web address, you get a simple yes or no about whether it responded.

Before you start

What you need

  • An AI tool that supports MCP, such as Claude Desktop or Cursor
  • An internet connection, since the checks happen online

Good to know
