open-memex MCP server

by stoneskin

Give your AI coding assistant a lasting memory of your project, saved as plain files on your computer.

open-memex is a memory helper for AI coding assistants. It saves the things you tell your assistant, like decisions and lessons, as simple text files on your own computer. Next time you open a chat, your assistant already knows them, in VS Code, Cursor, Claude Code, and other editors.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat about what is in front of it, and it forgets everything when the chat ends. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something. This one connects your AI to open-memex, a memory that lives on your machine. So when you say "remember this", the AI can save it there, and later look it up again for you.

What this MCP server does

You tell your AI something worth keeping, like "remember: we deploy on Fridays". The AI uses this helper to write that fact into a small Markdown file on your computer. When you start a new chat, the helper hands your AI the most relevant saved facts automatically, so it starts out already knowing them. You can also ask your AI to search the memory when you need something specific. Everything stays on your machine, in files you can open and edit yourself.

What you can do with it

  • Save a fact or decision so your AI remembers it later
  • Ask your AI what it already knows about your project
  • Search your saved memories by keyword, even with different wording
  • Replace an old fact with a newer one while keeping the history
  • Mark a memory as outdated when it no longer applies
  • Share chosen memories with your team through a normal code review
  • Check your memory for duplicates or stale entries

Try asking your AI

  • “Remember that this project deploys on Fridays”
  • “When does this project deploy?”
  • “Search my memories for anything about login”
  • “Save that I prefer short code changes”
  • “What do you already know about our database setup?”

What it gives back to you

You get answers in the chat, drawn from your saved memories. When your AI saves something, it confirms what it stored. When you search, you get a short list of matching memories with their text. Some commands also give you a report, like a list of duplicates or outdated entries.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js version 22.14 or newer installed on your computer
  • An editor that works with MCP, like VS Code, Cursor, or Claude Code
  • The open-memex package installed, or run through npx without installing

Good to know

Your AI can change or delete saved memories, and anything you choose to share goes into your project's code review, so check before you confirm.

Install it with your AI

Add open-memex MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check open-memex MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,609 MCP servers here for you.
