Weather MCP server (US)
by Thx93
Ask your AI for US weather alerts by state or a five-day forecast for any US location.
This is a small helper that connects your AI to official US weather data from the National Weather Service. Once it is set up, you can ask your AI about active weather alerts in a state or the forecast for a place, and it will look it up for you. It is handy for anyone in the US who wants quick weather answers without opening a weather site.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill, in this case a connection to US weather data. Here, the helper talks to the National Weather Service, the same source weather apps use, so your AI can look up real alerts and forecasts when you ask. You do not need an account or a password for it, because the weather service is free and open.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like what is the forecast for this address, or are there any weather alerts in Texas. Your AI passes that request to this helper. The helper then asks the National Weather Service for the latest data. It tidies the answer into a short, readable summary and hands it back to your AI. Your AI shows it to you in the chat, like a small weather report.
What you can do with it
- Check active weather alerts for any US state
- Get the next five forecast periods for a US latitude and longitude
- See the severity and official instructions for each alert
- Read temperature, wind speed and wind direction for a location
- Get a plain-language forecast summary you can skim quickly
Try asking your AI
- “Are there any weather alerts in California right now?”
- “What is the forecast for latitude 40.71 and longitude -74.01?”
- “Show me active alerts for Texas and what they mean.”
- “What is the weather like in Miami over the next few days?”
What it gives back to you
You get a short written summary in the chat. For alerts, it lists each one with the event name, the area, the severity, a description and the official instruction. For forecasts, it gives you up to five periods with the name, temperature, wind and a plain-language forecast. If something is missing from the weather service data, it shows the word Unknown instead of a blank.
Before you start
What you need
- Node.js 24 or newer on your computer
- A US location, since the weather service only covers the United States and its territories
Good to know
The hosted version charges a small fee per call in USDC on Base, so if you use that one instead of running it yourself, each weather lookup costs a little money.
