Context7 MCP server

by upstash

Your AI can look up current, version-specific documentation for coding libraries instead of guessing.

Context7 is a helper that feeds your AI fresh documentation for programming libraries and tools, straight from the source. It is handy if you use an AI coding assistant and keep getting code examples that are out of date or refer to things that do not exist. You do not need to be a programmer to understand the idea: it just makes your AI's answers about software more accurate.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with what it already learned, which may be months or years old. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to a service. This one connects your AI to Context7, a service that keeps up-to-date documentation for thousands of software libraries. When you ask a question about a library, your AI can call this helper, which fetches the right docs and drops them into the conversation.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like how to set up a certain library or fix a piece of code. Your AI uses this helper to search Context7 for the library you mentioned, then pulls the matching documentation and examples. Context7 sends that information back, and your AI uses it to write a better answer. You see the result in your chat, usually with correct, current code and steps. No more copying and pasting from old blog posts.

What you can do with it

  • Look up current documentation for a library by name
  • Get code examples that match the version you are using
  • Ask setup or configuration questions and get accurate steps
  • Find the right library ID when you are not sure of the exact name
  • Avoid answers about functions or features that do not exist
  • Get help with frameworks like Next.js, Supabase, MongoDB and many others

Try asking your AI

  • “How do I set up Next.js 14 middleware? use context7”
  • “Show me the Supabase auth API for email and password sign-up. use context7”
  • “Configure a Cloudflare Worker to cache JSON API responses for five minutes. use context7”
  • “Implement basic authentication with Supabase. use library /supabase/supabase for API and docs.”

What it gives back to you

You get a normal chat answer from your AI, but it is based on real, current documentation instead of the AI's memory. The answer often includes code snippets, steps, and links to the source docs. Sometimes your AI will show you which library ID it used, so you can check it. You do not get a separate file or dashboard; everything appears right in the conversation.

Before you start

What you need

  • An AI coding assistant that supports MCP, like Cursor or Claude Code
  • Node.js 18 or newer if you use the ctx7 setup command
  • A free API key from context7.com/dashboard for higher rate limits (optional but recommended)

Good to know

Context7's library documentation is community-contributed, so it may not always be accurate or safe; use your own judgement and check the original project when in doubt.

Install it with your AI

Add Context7 MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Context7 MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.
